Veterans Day Get-together November 11, 2009 8:30 AM In front of Lee Chapel

To mark Veterans Day, all military veterans at W&L (staff, faculty, and students) are invited to attend a brief ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in front of Lee Chapel.  A reception for the veterans will follow immediately afterward at the Reeves Center.

Members of the campus community are invited to the ceremony as well, to honor our colleagues who have served our country.

Law-Media Symposium The Perfect Storm: The Intersection of Sports, Law and the Media in a Celebrity Driven Culture November 11, 2009 - November 12, 2009

The 3rd annual Media-Law Symposium will be Nov. 11-12. This year the subject is: "The Perfect Storm: The Intersection of Sports, the Law and the Media."

Once again, there will be two main events. The first will be a panel discussion Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Stackhouse Theater. It features a remarkable group of participants:

     Larry Woodward (lawyer for Michael Vick)
     Lee Hawkins (Wall Street Journal reporter; host of the documentary "Newbos: The Rise of America's New Black Overclass")
     Christopher Lyons (Donte Stallworth's lawyer)
     Jackie MacMullan (former Boston Glove sports writer/editor now a correspondent for ESPN and a regular on "Around the Horn"

The second event -- a panel entitled "Women in the Locker Room: Are the Boys Still Being Boys?" -- will be held Thursday morning at 10 a.m. also at Stackhouse. It features an equally distinguished group:

     Lesley Visser (CBS Sports; first woman NFL beat reporter and first woman with Monday Night Football, among other "firsts"
     Christine Brennan (sports columnist for USA Today and commentator for CNN and CBS)
     Jackie MacMullan (ESPN correspondent)
     Kim Ng (VP and assistant general manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers)

The Media-Law Symposium is sponsored by the department of journalism and mass communications and the School of Law.

International Theater Festival and Symposium November 11, 2009 - November 14, 2009

Some big international names in the theater world will be attending the 10th National Symposium of Theater in Academe at Washington and Lee University from November 11-14.

Titled "Performyth," the symposium has expanded this year to include the First International Theater Festival. All performances and events are free and open to the public, but those who wish to attend three or more events, should pay the registration fee of $50. W&L students and faculty will have free access to all events.

Kamen Gallery: Netsuke, A Glance at Part of the Glickstein Collection September 1, 2009 - December 20, 2009 Kamen Gallery no charge

Introduced in 14th-century Japan, the netsuke would hang from a kimono's obi or sash by a cord to attach the container in which Japanese men would store their personal belongings. These soon became elaborately sculpted from ivory, lacquer, wood and other exotic materials.

The netsuke in the Washington and Lee Collection come from alumnus Joseph M. Glickstein.
