Art Exhibit: Kathleen Olson: Somewhere In Between
October 8, 2009
- November 6, 2009
Staniar Gallery, Wilson Hall
X
In her work, Kathleen Olson explores the intersection between domestic interiors and their surrounding landscapes. Her paintings focus on the vistas in the Mediterranean region, where these borders are particularly permeable; terraces open onto vineyards and balcony views emphasize the lush, rolling hills beyond. Windows and doorways reappear as portals through which the viewer can simultaneously inhabit both worlds, while reflecting on our relationship with the landscape.
Olson, a professor of painting and drawing at Washington and Lee, has exhibited widely in regional, national and international exhibitions. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants that have allowed her to paint in France, Greece, Italy, and Montenegro. Olson’s work is strongly influenced by her travels.
Staniar Gallery is open Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm

XIntroduced in 14th-century Japan, the netsuke would hang from a kimono's obi or sash by a cord to attach the container in which Japanese men would store their personal belongings. These soon became elaborately sculpted from ivory, lacquer, wood and other exotic materials.
The netsuke in the Washington and Lee Collection come from alumnus Joseph M. Glickstein.
Kamen Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
