The Howard Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships each year for independent projects in selected fields. The Foundation targets its support specifically to early mid-career individuals, those who have achieved recognition for at least one major project. Approximately ten fellowships will be awarded in April 2010 for 2010-2011 in the fields of Creative Writing in English: Fiction and Poetry

All current history majors, as well as those considering a major in history, are invited to this informational meeting.  Abby Perdue, pre-law advisor, will discuss law as a career option, and Career Services will cover a number of other possible career paths.  We plan to share statistics on what history majors have gone on to do after W&L over the past few years.  We will highlight in-demand skills and show you resources that will be helpful in internship and job searches.  We also hope to gather input from you on how we can be helpful in educating you about career opportunities.  Please feel free to bring your lunch.  We hope to see you there!

Dr. Ripan Malhi, professor of anthropology and human genetics at the University of Illinois, will speak on "Molecular Anthropology and the Peopling of the Americas."

Dr. Malhi's talk, which is open to the public, is during E hour (12:20-1:15) in the hopes of getting a good student attendance, too.

Please join Admissions representatives from top-ranked MBA programs for a panel discussion about the MBA degree to learn:

The first hour will feature a panel discussion and the second hour will be reserved to ask the representatives questions about their individual schools, as well as any other questions you might have about the MBA.

Richard B. Freeman holds the Herbert Ascherman Chair in Economics at Harvard University. He is currently serving as faculty director of the Labor and Worklife Program at the Harvard Law School. He directs the National Bureau of Economic Research / Sloan Science Engineering Workforce Projects, and is Senior Research Fellow in Labour Markets at the London School of Economics' Centre for Economic Performance.

The title of the talk is "Can the U.S. Restore Shared Prosperity After the Financial Meltdown?"

The talk is free and open to the public, and is co-sponsored by the Johnson Lecture Series, the Shepherd Program and W&L's Economics Department.

Introduced in 14th-century Japan, the netsuke would hang from a kimono's obi or sash by a cord to attach the container in which Japanese men would store their personal belongings. These soon became elaborately sculpted from ivory, lacquer, wood and other exotic materials.

The netsuke in the Washington and Lee Collection come from alumnus Joseph M. Glickstein.
